M1 macbook air speakers distorting severly.
My macbook air m1 has distorted audio, sounding like a resonance, on both of the internal speakers, when using the headphone port there is no problem. I've had this problem for more than a year, and tried everything I could. It started suddenly and symmetrically (on both speakers), but has gotten progressively worse, to the point where on minimum volume I can hear the distortion. The distortion is most pronounced in piano music, also the mail notification sound distorts quite a bit, you can really hear it's specific frequencies triggering the distortion.
What I've tried:
-Actually taking the speakers out to look for damage and clean them and the grills (no problems found - no change in distortion)
-Booting in safe mode, killing coreaudiod process, removing third party coreaudio plugins (library/audio/HAL)
-Holding keys and/or putting stuff on the keyboard to stop resonance (after trying this I'm convinced it's not the keyboard resonating)
-Running diagnostics (no problems found)
I've considered replacing the speakers, but from other people online doing this and seeing no change, I'm not hopeful. Also considering the distortion affects both speakers I doubt it's actual damage to the speakers. I'm at a loss with this, these speakers used to be great for the size of the laptop, now I can't even watch a youtube video with them because of the distortion. Any help / things to try is appreciated!
