Keynote transitions change back to "on click" after saving as automatic

I created a great slideshow in Keynote with no issues. My second try is not going well at all. Transitions keep changing back to on click, rather than automatic. I saved in automatic. I tried restarting, closing keynote. All the things. Even while I was trying to look up how to troubleshoot the issue (which I could not find), without even closing the slideshow, the transition switched from automatic to on-click. I have a MacBook Air, M2, running Sonoma 14.2.1.
