Major issue: custom phone number labels are gone under all contact phone numbers!

Custom phone number labels in ALL contacts are all missing and have been changed to the label "phone".

I have multiple phone numbers for each contact which specific custom labels for each number. For example: specific medical facilities which had at least 10 phone numbers, I set up a customized label for the assistant, radiology department, billing, etc. Every number under the contact is missing its custom label and they all list as "phone.". I don't know what number belongs to who under that contact. It is so frustrating. My default contacts is my Gmail account. I've spent multiple times with Apple on the phone and got nowhere. They are blaming it on Google. However, it was caused by the Apple update. And because it changed on my iPhone, when I log into Google from my MacBook and go to my Gmail contacts, they have all been changed as well. Obviously they changed due to the changes made through the iPhone. This is how it works. When you add contacts and emails on your iPhone and your default is your Gmail account, it automatically updates in the Google server. Now I have no way of retrieving any of this back to the way it was. What a nightmare! I really hope someone has a solution for this because Google blames Apple.

What is your default Contacts account? If none, please add an email account and enable contacts.

See the pic below

Unlike some Android devices, contacts are neither stored locally on an iPhone nor in SIM. They are synced to an email account that you had Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other

If you have a corporate email account added through a profile on your device, please check with your organization's system administrator.

The same thing happened to me, Tamarasaras, and I am in the same boat, with multiple numbers under a single contact, nicely custom labeled. My default contacts app is Google (maybe there is something similar in Apple contacts, JayGator). Try this. It just worked for me when all of my custom labels disappeared overnight last night. Aiyeee! Open Google Contacts (I opened mine on my PC, not my phone.), go to the settings icon in the top right corner, select undo changes, select a date, the give it some time. I got impatient when I didn't see any immediate changes after going back two days, then tried again, going back 14 days (I hadn't added many contacts in the last few weeks, so no big deal.), and waited an hour before allowing myself to look again. All of my custom labels are visible again, online and on my iphone! It would have been a complete nightmare, if I lost all those designations. Hope it works for you all.

This has been an ongoing issue for me for over a year and Apple still has not been able to issue a permanent fix. I have 2,400-plus iCloud contacts over several Apple devices and all custom phone, email, address fields for all of them in all Contacts apps (across iPhone, iPad, Mac, iCloud.com, etc.) were reset to "phone," "email," and "address." I only use Contacts through my iCloud account; no other accounts have Contacts toggled on. Even when I re-establish custom fields for a certain contact, they will revert to the generic fields, usually overnight. So even if I did update all 2,400-plus contacts, I have no confidence that all of that effort would be lost in the blink of an eye. And for contacts with multiple phone entries, for instance, it's a major PITA. C'mon, Apple. This is a major defect in your services.
