Apple TV not playing in 4K on Google Chromecast

Yesterday, I bought a movie on Apple TV that was advertised to be streamed in 4K. However, when I played it on my TV through Google Chromecast, it only played in a pixelated SD format.

I tried watching other content from my Apple TV library, but everything played in bad SD format. It seems Apple TV now doesn't allow playing in 4K on Google Chromecast.

Has anyone else experienced issues with streaming in 4K with the Apple TV App on Google Chromecast?

It's disappointing that now I can't watch my purchased Apple TV content in high definition on my television.

Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

Chromecast,

As a follow up to this, I have just now contacted Apple Support via Chat, and asked them to please have this bug investigated and added to their backlog of development work. The support agent was kind enough to "make a report" for the information I provided, and I received an automated email afterwards that indicated that "all of your comments have been forwarded to the appropriate team within Apple".

I gave them the link to this thread, so hopefully if/when a fix is deployed, Apple Support will let us know here.

I'm getting tired of resetting my Chromecast all the time.

Same issue here and it’s been happening since early 2023. It’s actually baffling how this still happens, and it all started after the version released on the 27th March 2023. I had the version right before that one that I downloaded from APKMirror that did not have this issue.

Another workaround (easier) is to open the Google TV settings -> Apps -> Apple TV -> Force Stop then Open. Your videos will play in 4K HDR10 again until the next time it goes to sleep.

So annoying, please fix this.

I have the same issue

There is a workaround, and it works 100% of the time for me, but it's a hassle.

It seems that every time the Chromecast goes to sleep, and then you wake it back up, the Apple TV+ App will only stream video in lower resolution (720?). But if you go in to the Chromecast settings, then go to System & Restart, and restart your Chromecast, the Apple TV+ App will stream in 4k.

However, this will ONLY work until your Chromecast goes to sleep again. After that, you must do another restart in order to get Apple TV+ to work in 4k.

For any Apple Support people in here, this issue does not happen with Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, or Criterion Channel. The only App I've had this issue with, is Apple TV+, so it does not seem to be a Chromecast bug.

Also - for what it's worth, I'm having this issue with:

  • Google Chromecast with Google TV 4k
  • Denon x2300w receiver (supports 4k)
  • BenQ HT4550i 4k projector
  • 4k certified HDMI cables
