There is an option on my mac mini to automatically delete trash after one month
I turned it on and was amazed to find nothing had been delete since 2022.
is there something I need to do to activate that option

It seems to me that you are not doing something wrong, this is a straightforward setting. The fact that the Mac isn't doing what is expected is understandably frustrating.
I wonder are these files located in the trash of your startup drive, or are they maybe located in the trash of external drives... or both?
Have you restarted the computer in Safe mode recently to troubleshoot this?
Can you create/use a second User account to see if the same thing is happening there?
It is no big deal to regularly empty the Trash. I always empty my Trash immediately after transferring items to it. That frees space on the Mac's HD.
I am not asking for ways to delete the trash. I been using a Mac computer since the original model and I know how to do that The question was why doesn't the option work t6hat in pointed out and am I doing something wrong to cause it not to work
+1 I concur with Ronasara and always Empty Trash after moving something to it.
To add to the above posts, Shift-Command-Delete (⇧⌘⌫) is the Finder keyboard shortcut for Empty the Trash.
