Track Pad Works But Will Not "Click"

I have an Apple MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021) running an Apple M1 chip with the latest Sonoma OS.

I do not use the laptops trackpad often as I work using an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Yesterday I went to use the trackpad and it feels firm and cannot be pressed down when clicked when both on and off. The functions of the trackpad however still work.

I have tried the following however none of these resolved the issue.

  • Turned MacBook off and on (Reset the SMC).
  • Checked the trackpad settings. "Force Click and haptic feedback" turned on.
  • Disconnected external devices and turned off and on again.

I went back to my MacBook this morning and the trackpad would click momentarily after it turned on but would then go back to being firm after approximately 30 seconds.

Please could someone assist me.

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.10
