What are the steps involved if iPhone does support this?

Thank you for your time.

I’m pretty certain that Apple is not working on it, and will never have it, as Apple considers the hardware port on iOS devices as a potential security vulnerability and restricts what can be connected to it. There have been exploits that have successfully attacked iPhones through the port, so Apple has locked it down rather thoroughly.

You should of course be able to share the iPhone 4G/5G connection via Ethernet to computers or other devices using an USB/lightning to Ethernet dongle attached to the iPhone.

Personally I would like to connect the iPhone directly to my WiFi router without using a computer between the phone and the router. This would allow for a simple and quick backup solution when the regular internet connection is down.

I'm not sure I understand the comments made by Lawrence and 100clicks? Do you mean that you don't need this function? If so, thanks for your valuable input!

Personally I never understood why they make underwear in so many different colors? Just keep to black and white! Also, I seldom eat pineapple....

What do you mean by “yet”. It’s quite a step to assume that Apple has any intention of ever supporting it. Why should they, given the other tethering options they offer? It may seem strange to you that Apple does not copy what others do. But if this is an important feature to you then you should purchase the device that best meets your needs.

Thera are iPhones and Android phones, comparing them or wanting them to be the same exact replica doesn't make any sense, there are also many smartphones models, the iPhones are working with an IOS operating system and what they mostly do is protect your privacy, they are not leaky colanders for private data and they also have a full encryption option. This is what they mostly care about. Other smartphones will have other priorities.

To answer the question of, 'Why would [you] want to use cables?':

In my case: Our broadband connection is slow. Faster ones cost more than we can afford. We are already paying for mobile data which offers download speeds that are 3x faster. Our office has poor mobile reception, but the upstairs bedroom gets perfect reception. We need to connect the computer in the office to the cellphone at the opposite end of the house. An ethernet cable will enable such a connection without loss of signal, without interference/noise. We have iPhone and this is why we need a lightning to ethernet adaptor for iOS.

The user who wrote the post you're responding to, back in January, isn't seen around here much.
