Apple Pay card not showing up as payment option for Apple ID payment method

I had a card setup for Apple Pay but it expired and apparently did not auto-update the expiration (like it is supposed to). I manually deleted the old card and added the card with the new expiration date.

However, now:

  • On iPhone (X running 16.7.2), when I go into name > Payment & Shipping, it goes to Add Payment with the only options being add a credit card or PayPal.
  • On Mac (M2 Pro 2023 16" Pro running Sonoma), when I go into App Store and name > Account Settings > Manage Payments or into Apple TV and Account > Settings > Manage Payments, it goes to Add Payment with the only options being add a credit card or PayPal.

The card is on the list of compatible cards and the card added fine in Wallet but it is not showing up as a payment option in other Apple apps.

Does anyone know what is going on (or, better, how to fix it)?

For anyone else that runs into this, it is counterintuitive.

Once you add the Apple Pay card to Wallet, you can't directly add it to your account as payment method. You have to (re)enter the card details and then you get prompted to link it to Apple Pay (and then it becomes the Apple Pay card in your wallet).
