Why does "Siri" no longer work, only "Hey Siri" on iOS 17.2?

When I installed iOS 17 I was able to use "Siri" instead of "Hey Siri" and there was a selection option under Settings > Siri & Search > Listen For. Since version 17.2 the selection option has disappeared on my iPhone (14 Pro) and there is only a switch labelled 'Listen For "Hey Siri"'.

The option to use only "Siri" seemed to be presented as a big development at the Developer's Conference last year but now it has disappeared on my iPhone. Is there something else I need to do to make "Siri" work without the "Hey" or has this been silently removed from the operating system?

I had this problem too.

My Siri language in settings was set to English (Singapore)... I set it back to English (US) and "Listen for Siri or Hey Siri" became available to me again.

Then you should probably call Apple Support. Apple does not monitor these forums and no one here is an Apple employee, nor are we volunteers paid by Apple to respond to questions.

Scroll down to find the support numbers for Ireland or Poland. If the phone was purchased in the United States and taken to Europe that may muddy the waters in terms of who you need to call.

Take a look at this document. Click on the Siri link and look at the countries where it is supported. Poland is not on that list but it may just mean Siri does not speak Polish. Call Apple Support

I found a possible answer to this. In the iPhone User Guide it says:

Note: The option to say just “Siri” is available on supported iPhone models in some languages and regions.

My iPhone is on the supported list. The language is set to English and the Region is set to Ireland. The iPhone is physically located in Poland. I have not been able to find a list of "languages and regions" where just "Siri" is supported.

I can't think of a reason why support for a language and region might be turned off.

  • Is it for legal reasons? Does that mean it now works nowhere in the European Union?
  • Is it for technical reasons? Why did it work before? This would suggest regressive programming which then suggests poor management of the development process.
  • Is it unintentional? Which suggests poor quality control.
  • Does anyone have other ideas?

This is very poor on Apple's part – deliver a new feature and then silently take it away.
