To free up more storage make sure you have a 256 GB model or better. The models with 128 GB hard drive/SSDs aren't really designed to be upgraded.
Free up storage space - Apple Support
Keep in mind any upgrade Catalina, BIg Sur, Monterey, Ventura or Sonoma requires you to upgrade to all 64 bit applications. This is covered in more detail on my Catalina tip.
Once you have at least 40 GB of contiguous space or 15% free of your drive (whichever is larger), then you can upgrade:
