Icloud backup too large

I have everything turned off in icloud backup.. everything.

photos, apps and all that can be turned off. My iphone backup size is still 24gb.

Since last price jump and no tier between 200gb and 2tb I decided to skip icloud completely and go with different solution at 1/12 the cost.

i want to completely skip paying apple and go down to the 5gb tier but it seems i can not with 24gb backup size.

why is my backup so large?

i have tried turning it off and on again but at no help.

i can not reset phone from new since i have 90000 pictures on my phone and doing a copy from ipad would take around 3000 airdrops.

help!

What ios do you have? I have a similar issue and im on ios 17.2 I have the iphone se 3rd generation just bought it in October and I have the ios 17.2 and I noticed that my icloud storage keeps getting bigger instead of smaller when I manually backup. I deleted my texts everday manually. I was told apple doesnt permantley delete them on the servers side until up to 4 days after I have manually deleted them. Anyways I played around with my phone trying to figure out why my backups are getting bigger not smaller when Ive been deleting texts etc. I noticed that when I went to settings>apple id>icloud>apps using icloud>show all>scroll to messages in icloud the toggle wont turn on. Its STUCK ON OFF. Im wondering if this is a bug in ios 17.2 since its a new feature in this particular ios 17.2. Im also wondering if this is why my storage keeps getting bigger not smaller when Ive deleted texts. This is annoyong it needs to be fixed. Ive been reporting it.

I sat with apple support for 2 hours .. it turns out even i had message backup turned off it still had 53000 messages hidden in the backup.

i had to turn on message backup again let it sync and then set the backup to 30 days and turn off message back up again.

i went from 24gb down to 256mb backup so it was solved this way.

thumbs up to apple support senior technical advisor for spotting that issue.

Funny thing is the message in icloud wont toggle on. I am on ios 17.2 and what do you mean you set it backup 30 days. Or do you mean you set for the messages to be deleted after the 30 days? Mine wont turn on at all and plus it asks me to turn on 2fa to turn it on which I dont do. Texts should be deleted on the server end in 4 days after you manually delete them. I feel like this is a major bug in the ios 17.2 itself
