Updating AirPods Requires a Computer:

This would be performed though a hardwired connection going directly in your computer. You cannot update in standalone. This is because AirPods are not assigned their own IP Address.

Laying these in the case, they would be seen through USB. To install the update, these must be connected to a computer. This is because AirPods are not assigned their own IP address.
