Mac battery drops from 80% to 0 and dies

In the last two weeks, my MacBook Pro 15in 2016 dies suddenly even when there is plenty of battery. It will be at 70% and then just die. When I plug it back it, it starts at 0%.

this is even when I am simply checking email and do not have anything intensive running at all.

Battery Condition: Normal

macOS: Monterey v 12.7.1

my software is up to date and I have already tried the SMC reset and that did not help.

Give the SMC reset another try... three or four time in succession... because sometimes that what it takes.

Otherwise, it may be time for a battery replacement. That's a seven year old battery.

Do you know the number of charge/discharge cycles that it has endured? You can find that number in System Information > Hardware >Power. Health Information, Cycle Count.

Obviously 202 cycles is well within the normal range of a healthy battery, so I agree that cycle count is probably not an issue.

Some veteran users here will tell you that finding a quality aftermarket laptop batterie is a crap shoot. Even if you replaced the battery with an Apple unit it may very well be that you have been handed one that is less that stellar.

The Mac folks at OWC/macsales.com sell a brand of battery for Mac laptops, and included on their website is this guidance on How To Calibrate a Mac Laptop's Power System - NewerTech. I really cannot say if this works, but it may be worth a try.

Sounds like a bad battery. Not all bad batteries will show a "Service Recommended" battery condition, however, the battery condition is more likely to appear just after your unexpected power loss (maybe even slightly before)....same goes for the Apple Diagnostics.

It is very unusual to have an Apple OEM battery to fail so quickly, but it can happen. A third party Lithium battery is much more likely to fail prematurely. You neglected to mention whether you received an official Apple battery repair, or received a third party Lithium battery. If you are going to use a third party Lithium battery, then I agree with @D.I. Johnson's recommendation for OWC, but even OWC batteries can have issues...more so than Apple's OEM batteries.
