'Disk not Ejected Properly' error on MacBook Air running macOS Sonoma

macOS Sonoma on macbook Air

When put to sleep, ‘Disk not ejected properly’ appears for all external disks on wake up. This is backup disc and data discs.

This doesn’t happen on my macBook Pro, using the same disks.

Environment: 14" 2021 Macbook Pro M1

"Disk Not Ejected Properly" started during my last update of Ventura, and has continued through Sonoma 14.4.1. It happens when the machine times out into sleep mode and when I put it to sleep manually.

This is more than inconvenient. One disk got corrupted, causing data loss. This issue has been reported across multiple models and macos versions.

I have not updated firmware. That leaves a security patch or bug repair as the likely culprit. Any ideas?
