Mac Studio sound issue with DAC via USB A

I purchased a Mac Studio M2 Max a few weeks ago.

I set it up with the sound going to an external DAC via USB A, this worked fine initially.

I am now getting a terrible interference/popping sound when any sound is played, when no sound is playing the interference sound is not made. If I connect the DAC via a hub using a USB C port the problem goes away, but I would still like to get to the bottom of the issue. The DAC is also fine using various other sources.

The problem persists if I start in safe mode and reinstalling the OS has not helped either.

Sending the machine away would be a big problem, as I need it for work, so any solution where I do not have to do this would be incredibly helpful.

Mac Studio, macOS 14.1

Thanks - I agree that is the best way to connect the DAC and what I will do once I get an adaptor or new cable, but the fact it was working with the USB-A port up until now and on my previous machines USB-A port does tend to suggest that something has gone wrong somewhere, which I would like to sort out in case it causes issues with anything else.
