Vertical Lines on Image Previews/Calendar Notifications

Since updating my Mac to Sonoma, I have weird vertical white lines or stripes on my calendar notifications and on some (not all) of my image previews. I've attached some screenshots. The blurs I have done intentionally, but hte vertical lines are what I'm talking about. You'll see that some image previews are fine while others display irregularly. I've tried searching but can't see anyone else talking about this issue. Has anyone else experienced this? I have a Macbook Air 13 inch with a retina display, 2020. I'm running Sonoma 14.0.

Did you ever resolve this? I have the exact same problem. My working guess is that it's something to do with HEIC images - I have had the problem with image previews in Messages for photos that are HEIC but not JPEG, and also for the calendar notification icons just like you shared, which I thiunk might be stored in HEIC format. I'm running a 2020 Intel Macbook Air with latest version of Sonoma

Hi!

  1. Yes, it remains after restarting my Mac normally.
  2. I almost said no, but yes, it occurs in other locations as well, like my Documents folder. But very, very sparingly. When I went through just now, I only saw it on one other photo, which seems strange but worth mentioning.
  3. When I open the affected photo in Preview or Photos the lines/stripes disappear. Then the thumbnail still displays the lines/stripes even after I've opened it.

Hello tianalei,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

It looks like you're running into issues with viewing Calendar previews and photo previews on your Mac. It looks like your Mac is up-to-date. Great job with keeping up with that.

Put the Mac in safe mode and see if you still have the same issue while in safe mode. Here are a few of the reasons we want to test in safe mode:

    • It performs First Aid on the startup volume, and attempts to repair errors if it finds them.
    • It limits third-party kernel extensions from loading.
    • It disables auto-login and suppresses startup items and login items.
    • It deletes certain cache files that could potentially cause macOS issues.

You can look over more information on this here Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. Safe mode can help with identifying issues that can be caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up.

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!

Hey there tianalei,

While you may need to contact Apple Support about this, we'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some other basics:

  1. As the issue remained in safe mode, does it also remain after restarting your Mac normally?
  2. Does this only occur with photo thumbnails in the Downloads folder, or does it occur with other photos in other locations on your Mac?
  3. If you open the affected photos in the Photos app, do they still show the white lines/stripes?

Cheers!

I haven't resolved this yet. I opened a ticket with Apple support and keep meaning to come back to it, but I've had work deadlines and can't be without my computer. I'm worried they'll have me send it in or something so I've been putting it off. It's an interesting theory that it's something to do with HEIC format - I've had the same issue with the image that shows up in the upper right hand corner of the Zoom application though, that shows the time. I'm not sure if that's HEIC format? I've also had it with screenshots and PNGs and none of those are HEIC. So I don't think it's limited to just that format...
