Hi LJCamper,

The steps in the resource linked to your post, If the volume buttons on your Apple TV remote aren't working, is the best path to get volume working on your sound bar.

Since you are getting that specific alert, you may also want to check to see if you still have CEC enabled as mentioned in: If you can't control your Apple TV with your home cinema or universal remote – Apple Support

"Make sure HDMI-CEC is turned on

If your TV or receiver supports HDMI-CEC, Apple TV uses the HDMI connection to allow it to be controlled by your TV or receiver remote.

If some features don't work:

  1. Make sure your TV or receiver offers HDMI-CEC support. For help, contact the TV manufacturer or check the manual.
  2. Check that your Apple TV is connected to an HDMI port that supports HDMI-CEC. Check the TV manual to confirm which ports support HDMI-CEC.
  3. Check that HDMI-CEC is turned on in the menu of your TV or receiver. Use the remote that came with your equipment. As manufacturers often have different names for HDMI-CEC, look for a setting that ends in "Link" or "Sync". Here are some examples:
  • LG: SimpLink
  • Philips: EasyLink
  • Samsung: Anynet+
  • Sharp: Aquos Link
  • Sony: BRAVIA Sync"

We also recommend restarting your Apple TV as this assures you have cleared out any minor software issues.

After months of trying to problem solve I finally found someone that was extremely helpful and solved the remote issue that happens when updating AppleTV OS 17 and higher.

Note: This is for those that are using the older optical connection and IR remote settings. When updating the Remotes and Devices > Control TVs and Receivers default settings change.

Below are the steps to getting your remote working again.

Apple TV 📺 Remote Fix

1. Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Control TVs and Receivers.

2. Set this to Off.

3.  Next, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control.

4. Select TV via IR.

5. Select Learn New Device.

6. Follow the on-screen steps to program your Apple TV

7.  Now you will need to teach the Apple TV remote to the home theater speaker:

a. Open the Sonos app for iOS or Android. From the Settings tab, tap System.

8. Select the home theater room and tap Remote Control Setup.

9. Follow the in-app steps using your Apple TV remote. You will be prompted to program the Volume and Mute buttons on the remote. Some Apple TV remote models do not have a mute button. If it doesn't, just wait a minute for this to timeout and continue. After completing these steps, this remote will be the only remote that controls your home theater speaker volume.
