Why did my friends location on Find my Friends not update for 6 hours?

My friend shares his location with me and it gives live updates as it is supposed to. Yesterday, I would call him and the phone would ring and go to voicemail and my messages were saying delivered. The weird thing is that his location was not updating during that time. It is not update all night until he texted me back 9 hours later. Why is that?
