News+ Family Sharing Parental Controls

I have parental controls set as indicated by Apple’s FAQ. It’s set to “clean”. However, I’ve just looked at the history on a child’s restricted device and the viewable articles are not even remotely “clean”. The thumbnails would be blocked from corporate internet pretty much anywhere, if that clarifies the content.

How is this possible when parental controls are set to “clean”? I trusted they would be functional and they very much are not. It’s not even a matter of different definitions of “clean”. An oh so tiny black box isn’t exactly changing the content of the photo or article accompanying it.

Is there any way to filter News+? The child in question wants access to read real daily news, and is old enough to do so, but clearly is not old enough to do so without accessing content that’s bordering on.. that word which the forum doesn’t allow. Is there a middle ground, or is removing the app the only option?

Greetings theldara,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, it's great to have you here.

We double checked the various options presented in Screen Time, to see if there may be a setting there to control the content available in Apple News. However, it doesn't look like Apple News is specifically included in the apps that you are able to customize. One workaround would be to block the News app completely, but we know that may not be the best solution for you at this time. If you did want to do that, you would follow the steps in this article: Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

It states the following:

Allow built-in apps and features

You can restrict the use of built-in apps or features. If you turn off an app or feature, the app or feature won't be deleted, it's just temporarily hidden from your Home Screen. For example, if you turn off Mail, the Mail app won't appear on your Home Screen until you turn it back on.

To change your Allowed Apps:
1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
3. Enter your Screen Time passcode.
4. Tap Allowed Apps.
5. Select the apps that you want to allow.

If this doesn't work for you, we would recommend that you leave feedback for Apple. This is your way to let the developers at Apple know what you'd like to see in a future update. You can do that anytime right here: Product Feedback - Apple

Thank you for being a part of the community here. We hope this information helps!

Best wishes.
