GPS speed lagging iPhone SE2020 after iOS 17 update

Since updating iPhone Se2020 to iOS17 and even the final version 16.7, GPS speed as shown on apps including Waze and Speedbox are lagging badly behind the actual speed.

The fact that this problem affects more than one app points towards a problem with iOS 16.6/16.7/17 and how it runs on SE2020 models. It is like the GPS update rate has been slowed down dramatically.

For example, when the car stops at the traffic lights, the GPS speed shown on either app is still showing 30km/hr at the moment the car stops, and takes 4-5 seconds to gradually count down to zero. When accelerating and steadying at cruise speed, it takes 4 - 5 seconds for the GPS speed displayed on the apps to catch up to reach a stable speed. When speed is varied up or down, a similar delay happens.

I have rebooted the phone, tried turning location services, wifi and bluetooth off then turning the phone off and turning it back on, turning the settings all back on again, resetting location and privacy, and nothing makes any difference.

Any help welcomed.

I am having exact same issue but on iPhone 14 Pro Max. None of the GPS respond on time - Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze. I have followed everything that Apple support recommended but nothing fixed the GPS and Compass. The Map orients diagonally when driving (likely due to offset compass). The Compass app is showing an incorrect direction even after "True North" is enabled. The direction is off by about 15 degrees. Below image shows my phone (extreme right) showing 15 degrees off.

I notified Waze support of the issue and sent them logs and all details.

Apple senior tech support called me and we went thru the details of the problem. They have handballed the issue to Waze to solve.

Waze then came back to me to say they need to do more detailed investigation of the issue and would update me when that is done.

I will update this discussion if/when I hear further info or the problem resolves. As at today its still lagging badly and the dropping out of speed data is happening again.

Hey there Moonlighter475,

Thanks for reaching out.

To clarify, are you only noticing GPS running slower than expected, or is the iPhone running slow in other apps as well?

If this only happens when using GPS, it's likely due to things like the sensors, GPS, networks, and other factors determining your location. If it is not showing the correct information or give inaccurate locations, then you can use the steps under "Improve GPS accuracy" in the link below to help:

What I have done already to try to solve:

  • updated to iOS17
  • rebooted phone
  • turned phone off waited 5 minutes and turned on again
  • turned wifi, bluetooth and location services off, turned phone off, turned phone back on and turned wifi, bluetooth and location services back on.
  • deleted Waze and reinstalled fresh
  • reset location services.
  • reset the display unit in my car (Mitsubishi Triton 4WD 2019 year)with Mitsubishi OEM Smartphone Link Display Audio that uses wired CarPlay.
  • Passenger tested the phone when I was driving with the phone NOT CONNECTED to the car’s display. No difference, speed on phone screen still laggy using both Waze and Speedbox the same as it is on the car’s display.

None of this made any difference to the lagging GPS speed displayed on either the phone’s screen or on the car’s screen.

The dropping out of speed data however seems to have stopped happening.

Tested my iPhone on my friend’s Toyota, same issue. Tested his iPhone 2022 on his car, perfect fast GPS speed updating as it should be.

Conclusion: Clearly an issue with my phone since updating from earlier iOS version a week or two ago. I believe it was running OK on 16.5 but the upgrade after that caused the problem.

The phone is running normally otherwise.

It is just that the GPS speed readings are severely laggy. I have tried it side by side with a friend’s iPhone Se2022 and the speed on his phone is not at all laggy like mine is since the recent iOS updates.

I actually timed it last night - the car came to a stop, and it took a full 7 seconds for the GPS speed reading on Waze to wind down to zero, or actually, it stopped for a further 5 seconds on 1km/hr before eventually dropping to zero.

i will stress that this is a new problem never seen before a week or so ago when I updated the phone.

Since the most recent iOS update to 17.2.1 the issue is much improved. At first, it can still be a bit laggy but after a couple of minutes it is good 90% of the time.. And, I am not seeing any more of the crazy random speed drops.

This kind of confirms to me that this was always an issue caused by iOS in the first place, possibly due to the way iOS passes GPS updates to Apps.

I haven’t yet tested the other apps affected but will try to remember to do that soon.
