Sonoma Update Missing URL Search Bar & + to add a new tab in Safari

I just updated to Sonoma. I have had the URL search bar at the top of safari above the tabs and favorites. Now, it is gone since the update. I scoured settings and view tab. I played around with things toggling them on and off. I can't seem to find where it went. I also no longer have that plus symbol to open a new tab to search google.

This can't be the only way to open a search bar...file..open new tab. How do I get the search bar back and the easy new tab shortcut button?

I hate updates that change everything.

Hello all,

After a lot of time trying to find the solution to this very problem - I contacted Apple Support directly, and someone was actually super helpful and my URL Search Bar is back. For reference, I am running my Macbook Pro 13 on iOS 14.3 version.

The Advisor told me to:

  1. Quit Safari
  2. Open a new Finder window (should be at the very top left corner of your home screen)
  3. You will see options next to FINDER like: File, Edit, View, Go, Window, Help etc.
  4. Select "Go"
  5. Select "Go to Folder..."
  6. A box will appear, type in: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Preferences/
  7. Open the first option
  8. Find the file that says:“com.apple.Safari.plist”
  9. Drag that file to the trash
  10. Open Safari

It instantly worked for me, so maybe it will for anyone else having this same issue. I hope this was helpful. Best of luck!

Same here, since the Sonoma update, my Safari toolbar is basically gone except for 'show sidebar' and 'tab group picker' on the left side. I noticed if I expand the window diagonally the rest of the toolbar faintly appears but disappears when I stop and is unclickable. Only extension I have is Adblock which has never caused issue before.

Having to just use cmd+t for new tab
