I have new series 9 AW and original Home Pod. When I place watch near Home Pod nothing shows on watch. It should show suggestions for playing and then automatically what is playing. The only integration is watch shows what’s playing when I have already set something playing on the pod, even then it’s subject to delays and is pretty unresponsive and has to be selected in the Smart Stack. Is this because it’s the original Home Pod?

The feature you describe, covered in the site Apple Watch Series 9 states:
"HomePod control. Watch takes the stage. A second-generation Ultra Wideband chip enables new integration with HomePod.1 When music is playing, Apple Watch Series 9 opens the Now Playing screen to let you control it. If nothing is playing, the Smart Stack will offer media suggestions to play on HomePod.2"
The referenced footnotes clarify:
It would appear that functionality is not yet active, and may not be available everywhere when it is released.
