Text msg alert sounds not working unless banners turned on

Text msg alert sounds are not working unless banners turned on. I tried turning off mac text msg notifications, turning off dnd and focus settings, turned off blue tooth, turned off and on wifi and the phone itself, force quit the messages app. The goal is to have the sound alert only - i do not want banners showing at all (there are 3 options for banners and i tried to turn off 2 out of 3 of the banners and that worked to turn the sound alerts back on). Still have t solved the puzzle of why all of a sudden with recent update to ios 17, my text alerts are silent unless banners are turned on.
