WebP images don't open in Preview

This article implies that Preview should open WebP images but it will not on my machine. I am running Catalina(yes, all updates). Any suggestions what the problem might be and no I am not buying a new macOS computer, just yet...

Images not loading on web pages. Using Safari 16.0 on macOS 12.6 images aren't loading on web pages, ever since I updated to this version. I've had to use an alternative browser (Firefox).

if you does not manage to open it then the free image program gimp is suppose to open them
