<Mac Mini M1 No sound on HDMi

Mac Mini M1 running ventura 13.5.2. I have 2 monitors connected. One through HDMi on the device iteself and a second through an expansion unit. No matter what I do I cannot get sound through the monitors. Only through built in speakers. When I go to sound settings it shows the monitors connected via HDMi but the output volme is "greyed out" I have another mac mini the same and I do not even get the option to play sound through HDMi

No solution seems to be available?

Sorry if this is too obvious, but sometimes it's the obvious things... what are the actual monitors? Do they have speakers? I just remembered that I have a Samsung SMBX2431 display, connected via HDMI right now on my desk - this display has no built-in speakers; it has an audio-out port to which I could attach speakers. If I just send sound out to this monitor, nothing comes out because, well... no speakers.

It is normal that the volume is greyed out. Do the monitors themselves have a volume control of some form (button, slider, menu)? If your mac says that the sound output is set to one of your HDMI monitors, then it probably is. FWIW, I work with several monitors and TV connected via HDMI and never had a problem - just set sound output to the desired device and control it there.
