HomePod Mini system 17.0

After updating (BIG mistake) to system 17.0, my HomePod Mini will not respond properly to tap to resume after several minutes (it will if I do so quickly). Also, I have a scene that will not work (even though it worked fine under 16.5). It seems that lately every "update" breaks something!

Not even a factory restore fixed the problem. This is all on Apple. I have reported this problem after each system 17 update including 17.2. Apparently, they cannot fix it or simply do not care.

Welcome to Apple's Homepod wack-a-mole game. Owning Homepod's will make you feel like Sisyphus pushing a rock uphill every day only to have it roll back down. It's an expense venture of trying to maintain functionality on a day-to-day basis. Reboot, reboot, reboot and if that doesn’t work…. uninstall and reinstall… then unplug, wait 30 seconds. I've been doing it for two years now for 9 Homepod's and I'm no further ahead then when I started.

Hey TomI37,

To clarify, did you update to iOS 17 or your HomePod mini? If you updated your iOS, make sure your HomePod also updated. If they are on mismatched OS versions, it could be the cause of some delayed results.

 1. Make sure that the device you used to set up your HomePod is updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS
2. Open the Home app.
3. Tap or click the More button , then Home Settings  > Software Update.
4. If there's a new update, select Update. If there isn't a new update, you can select HomePod to turn on automatic updates and get the latest software automatically when it's available. Software Update also tells you if your HomePod is already up to date, and shows you the installed HomePod software.

A white spinning light appears on the top of HomePod while it's updating. The update might take some time. Make sure that your HomePod stays plugged in while it's updating.

If your HomePod mini is updated, try the steps outlined in the Apple Support article, If HomePod or HomePod mini isn't responding. We find that the last step, restarting your HomePod, resolves many minor issues.

Kindest Regards.

This is what fixed it for me which someone else told me about. I had done everything except point 5 below.

I have a Windows PC and connected my HomePod via USB and through iTunes I "RESTORED" HomePod to factory defaults. It's all a pain but because it works it makes it all worthwhile in the end! I hope it works for you.

  1. Update iPhone and HomePod mini to 17.2
  2. Log HomePod mini out of Apple Music
  3. Restart HomePod Mini by unplugging it from power for 30 seconds.
  4. Remove HomePod mini from Apple account - under iOS Settings, Apple ID account listed devices.
  5. Restore HomePod mini to factory defaults. Connect to Mac vis USB or "Unplug Mini and hold finger on top method", both should work. Important step here is to initiate reinstall HomePod Mini OS.
  6. Re-activate and re-setup HomePod mini as you would when new, with iPhone.
  7. Make sure HomePod appears in the Home App and is logged in to your apple account in the Home App settings.
  8. Verify your wifi connection by asking Siri for the weather..
  9. Ask Siri to play one of your Apple Music playlists. Fingers crossed.

My complaint about system 17.0 on the mini implies I had updated to 17. The iPhone is on iOS 17 as well. As for 1 both systems are the latest available. As for 2,3,4 I will NEVER use auto-update again. I knew not to do that after the system 16 update which also broke things, but NO I didn't learn. I am testing the effect of a restart now but I do not have much confidence in that. Speaking of the restart, that also seems to be broken in the Home app. Asking for a restart in that app seems to do nothing.
