Airplay 1 not working after tvOS 17 update

tvOS 17 update completely destroyed Airplay 1 functionality on my Apple TV 4K 2017.

It's impossible to send audio from Apple TV to any Airplay 1 receiver and, more importantly, any app that still doesn't support Airplay 2 also fails to play. Many of these apps are quite popular: VLC, Plex (using old audio engine), Twitch. Yes, apps using the native Apple video player (AVPlayer) and apps with custom players supporting Airplay 2 all work, but it's still absolutely unacceptable to release a major new version with such a serious bug. I'm pretty sure this feature is not left out on purpose since all iOS 17 devices I've tested still support Airplay 1.

Okay, so a bit more testing:

  • tvOS > Airplay 1 device over ethernet > broken
  • tvOS > Airplay 1 device over wifi > works
  • macOS > Airplay 1 device over ethernet > works
  • macOS > Airplay 1 device over wifi > works
  • iOS > Airplay 1 device over wifi > works

So Airplay 1 over ethernet is not the problem. The problem is purely with tvOS. It finds the devices, connects fine, but doesn't actually stream the audio, or it reduces the volume to 0.

With regards to the network setup:

  • Fixed IP or not, doesn't matter.
  • Multicast DNS is enabled
  • IGMP snooping is enabled
  • Flow control is disabled

same here. tvos16 worked flawlessly.

tvos17 via ethernet

airplay to my yamaha devices which are only airplay1 compatible does not work.

airplay to my yamaha airplay2 devices works

tvos17 via wireless

airplay works to both airplay1 and airplay2 devices.

but it also seems airplay2 features are missing via wireless (no multiroom?). so i assume maybe apple uses only airplay1 via wireless and not airplay2, which would explain the behaviour.

ticket to both yamaha and apple opened.

yamaha already answered and pointed to apple

apple no response yet.

Yeah. My AirPlay situation is totally hosed after upgrading to tvOS 17. All my ATV 4K devices are locked when trying to stream from iTunes and Apple Music Preview. I have one older 4th Gen that I didn’t update, and I hooked it up and streaming to it is fine. Definitely a tvOS 17 bug. Hope they fix it soon. Can’t enjoy any multiple room audio right now from iTunes or Apple Music Preview. Very frustrating.

Your issue is a different one, AirPlaying FROM Ethernet-connected Apple TVs is fixed in 17.1. You’re trying to AirPlay TO it.

Also, I’ve just tested it myself, and iTunes displays the same error message when trying to AirPlay from iTunes to my Apple TV even when it’s on Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, it seems like tvOS 17 has multiple AirPlay and audio-related bugs still unfixed.

Ok. Good clarification. I guess I was hoping the latest update would solve both. And correct. I can’t airplay to either Ethernet or WiFi connected ATVs (4ks). But, oddly I can connect to WiFi connected AirPlay 1 devices from iTunes. And to boot, I have an older ATV that I didn’t upgrade to tvOS 17, and it still works fine. So, the issue ihas to be tvOS 17 related, which is just super frustrating.

Thanks for passing on this info ! I had the same issue connecting to my Yamaha receiver via Airplay post os17 update. I spent over an hour on the phone with Apple reps trying to figure out the problem to no avail. I prefer using an ethernet cable for it provides a more stable connection. It really ticks me off that Apple won't inform it's customers of these type of big changes so that we can decide whether to go ahead with the update. Even worse, they don't bother to update their help representatives to these issues with an update.
