bought a new iphone and tried to get the data to transfer, it was stuck all night on software update and nothing happened. I turned off both phones and started again and now it just sitting there saying connecting.... forever

I've been stuck in this predicament before. In truth, Apple's Software Update is annoying and sometimes gets stuck. It's better if you complete the opening process and when in the phone, THEN update the software. After which, hard reset the phone and then attempt to transfer everything. It'll work.

Are you on a Wi-Fi connection? The update won't work if you're using a Hot Spot.
