Downloading last compatible version of an app

My iPhone is running on iOS 14.3. The latest version of the app I’m trying to download requires iOS 15.0 or later. When I press “update”, I’m given the option to download the last compatible version of the app, which I select. Curiously and frustratingly, instead of starting to download, the same question pops up four more times, before the loading circle stops and turns back into the “update” button, as if I cancelled the update.

Tried this multiple times, every time it asks me if I want to download the last compatible version FIVE TIMES before cancelling the update automatically. What do I do? Screenshots provided below.

iOS 14.3 is over two years old, and all iPhones compatible with iOS 14 are compatible with iOS 15. You can update your phone for better security and to download apps that require a newer version of iOS like Google Drive.

Depending on what iPhone you have, the latest version of iOS available may vary:

If you have iPhone Xs, XR, 11, SE (2nd gen), or 12, you can update to iOS 17.

If you have iPhone 8 or X, you can update to iOS 16.6.1.

If you have iPhone 6s, SE (1st gen), or 7, you can update to iOS 15.7.9.

One more thing: My friend has another iPhone 6s Plus that’s running on iOS 14.4 (mine’s iOS 14.3) and the google drive app on their phone seems to be on a much newer version that the one on mine.

Drive app version on my friend’s phone (iPhone 6s plus, iOS 14.4)

Drive app version on my phone (iOS 14.3)

it would be enough for me if I could update to the version my friend has.

Updating iOS does not slow down your phone. This perception comes from an era of underpowered devices (iPhone 4, 4s) when updates to both hardware and software were much more drastic than they are today.

The differences between iOS 14 and iOS 15 are minimal – most lag you experience on iPhone is likely a result of a degraded battery or a poor wireless connection, not a result of iOS itself.
