Three Declined Transactions in Apple Wallet But not in Bank Website

Two months ago we visited a music venue where I used a credit card on Apple Pay to purchase food and drinks. Fast forward, this morning, I had a notification on my phone of three declined transactions of the same amount ($40.98) in Apple Wallet for the card I used then. All of the declined transactions for this credit card were within 10 minutes of each other. However, there is nothing showing up in our Bank's website of any of these charges. These charges also do not match the amounts of the previous purchases from two months ago.

Is it safe to assume our credit card information was stolen, a glitch in apple wallet with IOS17, or potentially the vendor/actor trying to re-run an apple transaction in hopes it goes through to eventually use for a larger transaction?

Note: I updated to IOS17 yesterday.

Thank you for your response, Jeff. However, this is for a Credit Card with another bank and not the Apple Card.

have not showed up in my Bank's Website of previous transactions. Only three declined charges of the same amount are showing up in the Apple Wallet under that card. I used the card via apple wallet and that charge showed up immediately in my banks website.

How do you know there were transactions? Did you receive an email, text, phone call? Where are you seeing these transactions?

This seems unusual. If your payment method/credit card doesn’t show a transaction on your bank’s app or website, there is not a charge.

All Apple does is extremely securely send data between the merchant and your bank and then back to the merchant. Apple Pay can’t approve or decline a transaction. It can’t initiate a transaction.

I wonder if the bank recently went through a system update/upgrade and an old decline showed up. I would call their cards support team using the phone on the back of the card. They will be able to confirm any transactions and offer an explanation or confirmation.

This could be a new >feature< your bank added to Apple Pay in iOS 17. Previously, only my Apple Card MasterCard in the Wallet app showed the declines like that. Many people have found is disconcerting over the years and want them removed. The declines however, cannot be removed, with Apple Card.

Have you ever had fraudulent activity on that account before and you notified your bank etc.?

Good thing you canceled your card/s - same thing has been happening to me and at first all I saw was declined transactions but nothing coming out of my account- then I started noticing the transactions coming out of my bank acct at 3:45am and other weird times that I was not using my Apple wallet- it is a problem with the wallet because the only fraud that is happening is through the wallet transactions. I was using it to pay for my train fare - and I keep having declined transactions for the MTA. No other businesses where I used my cards.

These first showed up as notifications on my lock screen.

To find them, I navigate to Apple Wallet App > Select the Credit Card > With Image of card up top and "Latest Transactions" below. 3 Charges with the Venues title on top with a red "declined" below and a value of $40.98 off to the right with a strikethrough. If I tap on each individual charge, they show: 9/19/23, 9:26 am | 9/19/23, 9:54 AM | 9/19/23, 10:02 AM.

Sometimes Apple Pay errors out with the reader and I have to re-initiate. This possibly could be those coming back after the software update. I don't believe my CC numbers were exposed as I would think they would use those to run them rather than try to re-run a previous apple transaction. I obviously don't remember if it errored out at this time as I am used to it happening often. ~1 a week.

This happened to me yesterday, credit card shows no pending transactions but I got a new card issued to be safe. Woke up today to several declined transactions for the same amount as yesterday to the same business spaced out but in the early morning hours while I was asleep. It’s all in my Apple wallet transactions but nothing shows in my bank account.
