Your Password is needed to enable touch ID

On my MacBook Pro 16" (macOS 12.5, MacBookPro18,1) I receive the message


"Your password is required to enable touch ID" everytime. Not just after a restart, reboot, etc but everytime the screen is locked.


How do I correct this issue to resume using touch ID?
