AirPods lowering volume when I speak

My AirPods started doing something weird after updating to iOS 17;

When I speak, or even sing along, it immediately lowers the volume to ensure I hear everything around me.

I understand that this may be a nice feature at times, it may need to be turned off when I simply want to tune out. In fact, on several occasions, I found it trying to answer questions from people around me simply because it thought that I was speaking.

What is the fix?

I’ve found the solution:

While AirPods are connected to iPhone via bluetooth

settings > AirPods > unselect conversation awareness

Hey there Waleed Q.,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We'll be happy to help with your AirPods. First, let's check your sound and volume settings: Pause, skip, and adjust volume with your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

"Use Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode with your AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation)

AirPods Pro let you control how much you hear your surroundings. Press and hold the force sensor to switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. You can select which modes the press-and-hold action switches between:

  1. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods].
  2. Tap the More Info button next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
  3. Tap Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Off." (retrieved from article linked above)

Take care.
