backup drive disconnecting

Hi I have an M2 Mac mini, im having trouble with my 2TB Western Digital Easystore Backup Drive disconnecting occasionally. It seems to do it when the computer is in sleep mode sometimes. Is it possible the hard drive is failing? Its an older model I believe maybe from 2018.

Time Machine failures/external drive keeps disconnecting with Ventura 13.4 I have a 1 TB LaCie mobile drive I use as backup for my i5 MacBook Air. I've backed it up with Time Machine many times in the past few years, but it's been quite awhile - over 100 days - and now that I decided I was annoyed with the reminder popup and decided to back it up today, my drive keeps randomly disconnecting so I can't complete the backup! I plug in the drive, run Time Machine and select "backup now," and I can see it start working. After a few minutes, it disconnects the drive. I get the notification popup that says "Disk not ejected properly," but I didn't turn it off or try to eject it. I tried both USB-C ports, restarted MacBook twice - and I updated the OS to Ventura 13.4 today, but this issue occurred right before I updated the OS, too (previously was on 13.3.3). Since my computer is an SSD, I don't have the option to disable disks from going to sleep, but my computer is plugged in right now, anyway. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

disk not ejected properly when time machine runs I have a new Mac Mini running Ventura 13.0. I have two external drives hooked up to it. One is set for the backup with TimeMachine. The other has data I want backed up. I've run TimeMachine manually several times and it seems to work fine. However when the lock screen is on, every time TimeMachine runs (every hour) there's two to three notifications "Disk Not Ejected Properly" for the data drive. It appears that TimeMachine still captures the data on the supposedly unmounted drive. How do I prevent it from making these notifications? (It's a serious pain to have to dismiss 20+ notifications every morning) Thanks in advance.

External USB Backup Volume won't mount after Ventura upgrade I recently updated the OS on my MacBook Pro to Ventura 13.0.1 and now the backup volume on my external usb hard drive won't mount. The other backup volumes that are on the USB hard drive (for other computers) will mount. The other computers have not been upgraded to Ventura yet. I tried checking the volume with DiskUtility and it failed. Tried mounting it with DiskUtility and it failed with error com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49217. Also tried mounting from command line, also didn't work. Anyone else having similar issues and is there a know fix (other than reformatting)?

Depends on the macOS version.

In Monterey and earlier, go to Apple > System Preferences > Energy Saver and check "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping when the display is off"

In Ventura, go to Apple > System Settings > Displays > Advanced and Toggle the switch for “Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off”

Disable Automatic Computer Sleep by Turning on Prevent Automatic Computer Sleep and test.

Then just let the display turn off on the timer during the day and sleep from the dropdown or shutdown overnight.
