Why can’t I install the iOS update?

It says update is available when iPhone is backed up. I can’t get my phone to completely back up. What do I need to do?

Your issue is not very clear. Backing up and Software update are 2 separate processes, not related to each other.

You can backup without updating, and you can update without backing up.

What exactly is saying there's a software update?

If you are trying to backup to a computer and it pops up a software update message, that's just a firmware update for the computer to connect to your phone. Do the software update, and then you can back up the iPhone.
