Copy and paste in Notes often unreliable

TL;DR version:

Notes sometimes gets into an error state, where what is pasted isn't what I copied.

Longer version (initially posted here)

Like many others, this Notes copy-and-paste issue has dogged me for years, likely before tusken_ryder reported Notes, copy paste doesn't work in 2019 ("Me too'd" 1000+ times).

It's followed me through 4+ versions of macOS (now on Ventura 13.5) and two Macs (2015 MBP, 2020 M1 MBP).

It's also infuriatingly intermittent. I'm unable to reproduce the error reliably, on-demand.

30 min ago it pasted text from elsewhere in the note that I didn't copy, which prompted me to search forums. (I found this still-open post but didn't get a reply.) My go-to fix is to open the note in a separate window and trying again, this works 100% of the time.

Super-helpful members like dialabrain and P. Philips have made several suggestions in other posts, like updating macOS (done) and running a full report with EtreCheck (done, posted separately below).

For those reading the report: I only recently started using clipboard manager iClip, years after the odd behaviour started.

While reviewing the report, I somehow triggered Note's copy-and-paste issue, which I logged below:

@steve626, thanks so much for your comprehensive reply!

Diagnostics: have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if the Notes issue goes away?

No, but may do so as a first step based on your recommendation.

In retrospect I avoided it because:

  1. I always imagined the inconvenience of a few other important things not working outweighed the issue, and
  2. The problem is intermittent — I may not be able to reproduce it in an hour or two.

Another thing to try: create a new vanilla user account on the Mac...

This may be even more inconvenient. I'll Safe Mode first, so at least my work setup and apps are available.

You have Configuration Profiles installed. Is your Mac a managed computer? Is it your personal computer?

The Mac is mine.

In my last install-from-scratch I went with Fastmail's Automatic Setup which used a Configuration Profile rather than Manual — is there a specific downside from a security or reliability perspective?

It shows Bitdefender virus scanner... (it) should be completely UNINSTALLED.

Actually, I've never had active, run-in-the-background antivirus. To my understanding this one's purely scan-on-demand. It has caught the odd virus or two in the last 5 years, as payload in emails affecting only Windows iirc.

I kept it to give me a (false?) sense of security when downloading software outside of the App Store.

Are you saying there's zero value at all?

You have aText installed

Happy to remove it in a trial, along with the others.

You have iClip installed

Only from January? Certainly years after the odd behaviour started.

You have Tunnelbear, more security software, not needed under a modern MacOS, can only cause harm.

Purely used for VPN which I do use but rarely, so it's inactive >99% of the time. I know macOS introduced things like iCloud Private Relay and lots of other good things but there's still some good use cases for VPN.

If I were you, I would (1) perform the diagnostics suggested...

Again, thank you @steve626, I'll start with Safe Mode.

The work from @steve626 is very good and would suggest following it

As an aside.

There was a Regular Contributor with Issue Coping and Pasting text or urls into Notes that would not bring the url into Notes as a Clickable Link to web address.

In their situation, they had a Third Party Clipboard Application that really mucked up the whole functionality

Have found at least one link to the Users experience .

Contributor was @Randall_2023 with several Other Contributors involved to try and sort this out

Any credit for fixing or offering solutions to your issue, IMHO belongs to Original User who has offered their time to assist

Your Etrecheck report shows a large number of system extensions.

Diagnostics: have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if the Notes issue goes away? Another thing to try: create a new vanilla user account on the Mac and see if the unwanted behavior continues. These steps may determine if something installed is causing this.

The Etrecheck report also shows:

  • You have Configuration Profiles installed. Is your Mac a managed computer? Is it your personal computer?
  • It shows Bitdefender virus scanner. That can interfere with the MacOS, it should be completely UNINSTALLED.
  • You have aText installed, which automatically expands and manipulates text. That seems suspicious to me given the problems you are having.
  • You have iClip installed, which manipulates your clipboard, or does something with it. Also suspicious given the problems you are having.
  • You have Tunnelbear, more security software, not needed under a modern MacOS, can only cause harm. Maybe unrelated, but if it interferes somehow with iCloud and you are using Notes in iCloud, it could be related (unlikely, and probably a stretch, but irregardless, this type of security software is superfluous with current MacOS versions).

If I were you, I would (1) perform the diagnostics suggested above, (2) completely UNINSTALL aText, iClip, Tunnelbear, and Bitdefender. Uninstall means using a vendor provided uninstaller (not just moving some files or the app to the trash). You can always reinstall them again if uninstalling them doesn't help.

Thanks for your input, great to see you here too P. Phillips. I can imagine how third party clipboard apps can muck things up with copy-paste.

As I mentioned in the OP, I started using iClip only in January, whereas the problem is at least 4-plus years old.

I'll try using Notes in Safe Mode over this weekend and see what happens.

As an aside, are you in agreement that VPN is no longer required in macOS?

Much has changed since about macOS 10.15 Catalina released in 2019 and possibly even more so since possibly macOS 10.14 Mojave

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

VPNs are only really doing what they are Intended to do if working from Home and logging into the Company Network

That or connecting to your Bank, Investment or such similar type of Secure Environment

refer to below for additional reading on what seems be what Commercial VPNs are actually going

"TunnelBear VPN is owned (since 2018) by the McAfee security company and is based in Toronto, meaning it's in a country that participates in intelligence-sharing alliances and is subject to robust consumer-protection authorities. TunnelBear has a no-logs policy and while it used to post transparency reports documenting government requests for data, the last such disclosure came in 2020." - usnews.com
