Cropping / zooming photos of contacts in iOS does not work
Contact photo reverts back to the original immediately after saving. Any fixes for this? Currently on iOS 16, but experiencing the issue also across earlier iOS versions.

Report this Solution to Apple:
Do your Part: Let Apple know of what is going on here. They should be made aware of this issue, along with the solution. Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more they hear of this, the more they will know what their customers prefer and what features need to be added. These are just User-to-User forums. Apple barely reads there found as it in on their own time and will. Apple will know nothing of this fix, if you do not report it to them.

OK, I might have an answer: What finally worked was realizing that some of my contacts were originally managed in Gmail; and that the sync between Google and Apple iCloud contact photos was not working properly.

To check if you have any accounts other than iCloud set up on your iPhone with access to Contacts (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook): go to iOS -> Settings -> Contacts -> Accounts; and see which of those accounts have "Contacts" enabled.
Hope this post is helpful for some. Searching online comes up with many similar posts and frustration with this issue across 9+ years, with no convincing answers. Now that it seems to work properly for me, I’m curious to hear if it will work for others as well.
Yeah that works but shouldn’t have to do that. It has a crop option so it should crop the pic
I had this same issue. My work around this, is to make a copy of the photo in your photos app. Then on one of them, crop the photo to your liking as square a square. Then use that cropped photo as the contact photo item. iSO 17 has made it nice to have a poster image and a contact photo separately to make these function nicer. Hope that helps!
this happens even with iOS native emoji avatars. You have them cropped to the bottom edge of the circle then save it. Then a few seconds later in the contacts or messaging app the revert to a “see-all” centered version woth padding all around. The flat bottom of the avatar emoji pic is now visible.

Troubleshooting Cropping/Zooming of Contacts:
Are you taking about screenshots? OR are you talking about the photos you've assigned as to the Contact? If you want to enlarge it, then you'd have to take a screenshot of the image, zoom in as desired, and then add the screenshot. Save the original photo, or else all of it would be lost: Take a Screenshot on your iPhone - Apple Support

Image Cropping Bug:
It’s been a bug, and still is one. Question is: “Just how many people have reported this to Apple?” If no fix, then likely not many. So, do your part: report it.
I fixed it by making a copy in Photos and cropping the copy into a square.
You are a life saver! Thank you so much! Been struggling with this annoying issue for years
Helpful, thanks. But there doesn't seem to be an option to crop/zoom/edit the existing photo in Google contacts. I need to upload a new one.
Worked like a charm. Thank you!
