Apple TV Can't Connect to my Itunes Library

I have a 4th Generation Apple TV that I use at my entertainment station to play my itunes music through my good speakers. Itunes is on my desktop Windows 10 machine that is in my office. The actual music library and itunes files are on an external drive attached to that desktop. Both the desktop and the Apple tv are ethernet wired to the same router (I only have one). So, the problem is not one of them being on different networks.

This system has been working well for me for years and all of sudden, yesterday, the Apple tv is giving me a message that it can't connect to my itunes library.

I spent all day yesterday working on this. Sigh. And I feel no closer to fixing it.

Things I have tried:

  • Yes, itunes is open on the desktop when I'm trying to access it on the apple tv
  • Made sure I have the same user id signed into itunes and the apple TV
  • Made sure apple TV, Windows, and itunes all have all updates installed (the caviat to this is that my computer says it can upgrade to windows 11 and I'm not ready to do that. So, that hasn't been done)
  • Made sure under sharing in itunes I have the "share all files" box checked
  • I use ESET for virus and firewall protection and tried pausing that
  • Turned off both apple tv and desktop and turned back on (multiple times in multiple orders)
  • Turned off home sharing on both apple tv and desktop and turned back on (multiple times in different orders)
  • Turned off and restarted both router and modem just in case, while turning off and restarting both apple tv and desktop
  • I had just purchased a 2nd, matching, apple tv that had not been installed yet, so I switched out the apple tv for the new one, just in case
  • Tried replacing the router with my backup one just in case
  • Reset the apple tv

Can anyone help?!!!!

I'm in the middle of a crunch period and really can't work without music. So, this is a HUGE problem and I don't know what to do!

I'm sorry you're experiencing this Kshemi. I've been having the same problem.

I have two Apple TV's, one is much older than the one I'm trying to connect to but I can't connect to either.

I have Windows 11 Pro on my desktop and the Microsoft Store has an issue where it won't let me update any of the apps I've downloaded. Windows, my BIOS and as many other drivers and firmware are as up to date as possible. My modem and router are from the cable company and they claim they update the firmware for those devices. I've had my own router and modem in the past that their website said was compatible but I believe they sent out a signal to fry them so I'd go back to paying rent on their equipment which is cheaper than shelling out $300 for a router every 6 months.

I used to have no problems connecting to the library on Windows 8 but since the upgrade to 10 it's been nothing but a nightmare, and not just with iTunes, but with browsers and anything non-MS.

The Library program on Apple TV isn't the same as the Computer program. The playlists it has access to are from several years ago. I have no idea why it can see recently downloaded songs but not update the playlists. That's the only reason I want to get into iTunes on Apple TV, is to play music on my 400 watt soundbar wile the 4K screensavers play.

I'm going to try changing my desktop Wi-Fi to a private network and restart my computer. That's supposed to make make it discoverable on the network for file sharing. That's under Network & Internet/Wi-Fi. If it doesn't work I'll switch back to Public which is recommended but it's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

Good luck!

I was talking to Apple support and he fixed it for me. I have a deco mesh system and whole house is Ethernet cable. He told me to turn on WiFi in windows 10 and select my deco system and it now works. He says I might have a bad Ethernet cable to my pc, which wasn’t the case. I hope it helps someone, it worked for me. Let me know if you’re someone who is helped by this. I can now click the computer icon on my Apple 4k tv and my library and videos/movies play.
