Received Apple alert that my account had been breached

Received pop-up on iPad saying was from Apple & that my Apple ID (or Apple account) had been hacked. They asked me to log on to my iMac (which they knew I had) & I spent 3 hours with them giving info & them installing software & other things they said would protect. Seemed convincing but I’m a skeptical person. Was this legit? I alerted my bankers but am still leery.

Definitely not legit. All such messages are scams presented by criminals. If you allowed the criminals to access your computer, immediately change all passwords that were ever used on that computer. For maximum security, restore it using your backup to a time that predates the intrusion.

Along with stedman1's advice:

I presume you gave them a credit card number to make these monthly charges. You should contact your card service and have them cancel that card immediately, and issue you a new one. The chances they will soon use it to make fraudulent purchases is very high. Or, they'll sell the information to some other crook (or multiple crooks) who will.
