Read receipts for iMessages not working with one person after trying all suggestions I've found here.

Hello,

My wife can see when I read iMessages she sends me.

I cannot see when she reads iMessages I send her, they simply show delivered.

In both directions they send as iMessages (blue).

This has been going on for about a week, perhaps longer. It occurs whether the phones are using wifi or cellular data, in areas of good or poor connectivity.


Things I've done to try and resolve it without success besides wifi on/off, different locations, sending test messages repeatedly:

Updated both phones (iPhone 13 pro) to the latest IOS, both were on the prior release version before update, retry.

Confirm send read receipts, imessage, mms were already enabled on both phones in settings -> messages.

Confirm send read receipts is enabled on both phones within our iMessage conversation.

Turned all those things off one at a time, wait 10 seconds, turn each back on, retry.

Confirm both phones aren't in a focus mode that could be inhibiting receipt of notifications.

Restart both phones, retry.

Confirmed same issue from computer to computer rather than iphone initiated iMessage.

Log out of iMessage on our computers after confirming they also already had send read receipts enabled, just in case it might help, retry via phone.

Deleted our phone conversation from computer and phone, started new conversation on phone, retry.


I may be forgetting some additional tests, but that's the gist of it, nothing I've tried has resolved this. Read receipts used to work, still work for me with others, and neither of us changed any settings between when it worked and stopped working. On first review of the settings with the phones sitting next to each other, they were identical and already correct. I only turned things off and back on because someone on here said it might help to do so.

Issue resolved. A senior Apple support rep did call me.

They had me turn read receipts off on my wife's phone, restart the phone with read receipts off, then after the phone powered back up, turn read receipts on.

I tested and it still didn't work.


Then I decided to turn read receipt off within our individual imessage conversation on my wife's phone, turned it back on, tested again, and the read receipt did work.


Apparently the reset with the main send read receipt function off still did something that helped clear this out when I turned send receipt off and back on in the individual conversation. It doesn't make sense, but I hope this helps someone avoid a long chat or call about it.
