Switching AirPods between devices

I just bought a MacBook Air and my AirPods Pro wont seamlessly switch between my iPhone and my Mac. I always get a little notification at the top right corner that they are being detected but I have to press the connect button. If I do not press it the sound will come out through the speakers. I know its just a little click but I am really used to them just switching between my iPhone and iPad. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
