Resting calories on Apple Watch is far too high.

have noticed that my watch suddenly overestimates my resting energy. Just after wearing the watch for 20 minutes, it claims that I've burned almost 2000 total calories. By the end of the day, it says I've burned around 4000 calories, which is definitely incorrect. I have tried to fix this using several methods. I have updated both iPhone and Watch, checked that my health data is correct, turned off and on both my devices, and recalibrated motion. I have also attempted to change my exercise goals, but it hasn't helped. What should I do?

4000 Calories is rather extreme, I think you would notice the exertion! I'm guessing you are seeing this in the Move display of the Activity app.

I suggest several approaches to this problem.

  • Monitor the energy display during your day, try to identify whether it is a steady input including inactive times, or is the extra exercise arriving in batches. That might help identify whether you have a defective sensor, a rogue input program, or simply an incorrect calibration.
  • In your iPhone's Health app, dig down into the relevant data. Look at Show All Data which should show each addition on a blow by blow record. Also look at Data Sources to see if there is an unexpected or duplicated device providing spurious inputs.
  • The Show All Data entries should also let you see exactly when the problem started, certainly to ± 1 day and maybe even to within hours. Try to remember if this corresponds to anything which might suggest a cause of problems - maybe a software install or update on either your iPhone port your Apple Watch.
