Carplay disconnecting on iPhone 12 with iOS 16

Hello,

every time I connect my iPhone 12 (with latest iOS 16) to my Dacia Jogger, Carplay disconnects after a few minutes. I am using an Apple original cable but the strange thing is that if I use my wife's iPhone - an iPhone 8s with iOS 16 too - everything works fine, with the same cable.

I also tried with an older iPhone 6S, it works too.

I tried all the trubleshooting I found on the web, even contacted Apple Support via chat but nothing changed.

I don't think it's a car problem, since other phones work. Ad I don't even think it's iOS 16, because my wife's iPhone runs it and it works.

It must be some settings - which, honestly, I did not found in any troubleshooting on the web - ore even some hardware problem.

My iPhone's connector seems to work fine, no issues charging in any way.

What can it be?

Thank you.

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

  1. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. If you need help with CarPlay - Apple Support (IN)
  2. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  3. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  4. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

If your vehicle is equipped with only USB-A ports then this would appear to be a cable chipset issue. Newer OEM cables utilise a chipset that facilitates fast charging and broader communication capabilites between devices; ie USB-C type cables. USB-A type cables do not. After some fairly extensive testing it has been found that only USB-C OEM cables or the aftermarket equivilent (that carry a C89 chipset) are 'capable' enough of handling CarPlay function on newer, higher powered handsets on certain vehicles. If you are attempting to use CarPlay from a newer handset with an older USB-A type cable, it is likely to overload its capability and cut out after just a few minutes requiring a disconnect/reconnect to re-establish communication (only for it to then cut out again a few minutes later).

As for options, you can try:

  • Updating software/firmware on both devices.
  • Replacing your older USB-A cable with a newer version equipped with a C89 chipset.
  • Adding a USB-A to C converter and using the USB-C cable that was supplied with the handset.

If you're willing to give any of these a try, let us all know how you get on.

Not all C89 cables work, even if they are “Carplay certified”. I tried a lot of them, only one works: the Eono lightning to USB-A cable, which is not availble anymore on Amazon. Technically, new Apple original cables are C89, still they don’t work. Having a C89 chipset is apparently not enough to work properly and frankly I do not know why Eono cables work since their specifications are the same of any other C89 cable.

Using a USB-C cable with a USB-C to A does not work, too. I used different cables, also an original USB-C Apple cable with an adaptor, it disconnects after two minutes, like any other cable.

Thank you for the additional information. If I may ask, which version of Dacias Media system is fitted to your Jogger and what is its current software version? Additionally, what iOS version is your iPhone 12 using? I would like to replicate your exact conditions so that I can test the various equipment I have available and attempt to find a fix. Thank you again.
