AirPods “Outside of case” when using find my

My AirPods Pro are both in case. Both charging. But when I use Find my it says the left is outside of the case. Therefore, it doesn’t find the AirPod, nor will it play sounds. Any idea why or how to fix? Or do I need to add another air tag as I’m sure is intended?
