Cannot Wake MacBook Air M2 after Sleep

After my Macbook Air with M2 goes to sleep and I wake it, the screen does not wake, though the keyboard lights up.

This was happening more frequently three weeks ago, and then a 2nd problem presented itself. The battery would not charge (tried USB C and MagSafe cables). Tried original charging cables and third party cables, none of which could charge the battery. Visited Apple Support — they replaced the whole motherboard.

Now, first day of using the Macbook Air with brand new motherboard...

I have not re-installed my back up yet... I have set it up as a new computer, and added only two apps from the App Store: Notion & DuckDuckGo

In this computer with newly replaced motherboard, the problem happened again. Apple Support asked me to try operating in safe mode.

When I was in safe mode, there were instances where the computer went to sleep, and I could wake it BUT then same problem happened again. The laptop went to sleep, and the only way to get the screen back on was to force shutdown and restart the computer. Both Notion and DuckDuckGo were open at the time, but in the background.. Safari was the active window (on the YouTube page).

Frustrating to have to shut down and reboot after the computer goes to sleep (and also not sure if this issue is related to my battery not charging issue which happened some weeks ago. The reason I fear this is that the failure to wake issue was happening more frequently in the lead up to the battery issue).

I have the Mac Air M2 running 14.1.2 and i, too, experience this issue regularly even though it does not happen every time i put it to sleep. this is very frustration especially one of the users said Apple needs to replace something. i prefer not having to take it my machine and leave it there for god knows how long.

is it really a hardware issue or apple can correct with a firmware update?

Finally, for me, this issue was solved, but only after Apple replaced almost every component in my Macbook Air M2. See below for what they replaced.

BUT... I believe the culprit was the "Lid Angle Sensor". Ask them to look at that component or replace that component.

I firmly believe it's a hardware issue — not software related.

They replaced:

  • the display,
  • the "Top Case with Keyboard"
  • the "Lid Angle Sensor"
  • the "Touch ID"
  • the "Trackpad"
  • the "Logic Board (M2, 8-Core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16 GB)

UPDATE: I talked to a support agent and basically they said they'd bring this up with the eng team. However, the issue seems largely related to when I use peripherals (e.g. external monitor) where the peripherals vaguely cause the computer to not be able to sleep/wake properly -- not sure if this scenario is the same for everyone else. So the current, unfortunate, workaround is just to not use peripherals like an external display :/

I ended up returning my M2 and getting a used M1 off of eBay for less money with better internals that has had zero issues. This might be a rare issue, however, it has made me weary of purchasing anything brand new or the latest, "greatest" model. I still think that Apple products and MacOS are amazing and of much higher quality and will continue using Apple products as my tools, but this problem made me hit the breaks on being cutting edge.

I am still having this problem. I worked with Apple chat and phone support this morning to no avail. I also experience this issue if the screen goes to sleep (but not the computer) for even one second. I try to get it to turn back on but all I have is a lit keyboard. They had me turn off login items and background apps that I like to use. They want me to create a test user and then use that account until it happens again and then contact them. I get them wanting to narrow it down but I need a functional computer for work and for the amount of money these cost there should be a priority to get this fixed. It gets frustrating when I have to force my computer off several times a week on a computer that is less than a year old. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that ran many versions of OSX and MacOS until it wasn't supported. It runs Ubuntu now and hasn't had this many problems. I also have a 10-year-old ThinkPad X250 running Windows 10 that has also been perfectly stable. It's getting to the point where I'm about to just suck it up and move away from iCloud. Sorry for the vent, it's just been frustrating this last month.
