I got used airpods, but they wont connect

My dad bought a new car that was recently used, in the back was abunch of random things the previous owner never cleared out. There was a pair of first generation airpods fully intact in a backpack, they refuse to connect to my phone tho whatever I do. I've already tried to reset them, etc... how do I fix this?

Using Found AirPods:

If these AirPods are not yours, then I recommend you hand these in to the location where you found these (the car dealership, perhaps)? See if they have a Lost & Found facility where they can keep it at. If these are synced to the car's audio system, then someone might be able to track these down with Find My. So, I recommend handing these in, for Security & Privacy purposes and concerns. See here: Find your Lost AirPods - Apple Support
