I'm a new macbook user (from windows environment). It's frustrating the heck out of me that I can't get to the desktop with keystrokes. I've tried Fn F11 and Cmd F3. The swipe thing works, but I should be able to do this with keystrokes. Thanks!

It should be just F11 unless you set the keyboard settings to use the function keys as function keys.
By default, that is off and the F-keys do what the symbols show. If you hold down the fn key you get the F-keys instead of the function.
