I had the same issue and what it was for me was my HomePod was not on the same network as my Apple TV and other home hubs. I also had firmware mismatches among the Apple TV's and other IOS devices. Once I updated everything to 16.6 and had my iPhone on the same network as the HomePod during the install, they completed successfully.

After talking to a very friendly and competent Apple tech support member (in Europe), I learned the following. The issue is actively investigated by Apple and acknowledged as a bug. We, of course, have no idea when this behavior will be fixed.

And she confirmed that all you can do is give the HomePod the time it needs to "be done configuring". Frustrating, yes, but at least they seem to be working on it.

Hi Ap0623,

If your HomePod mini is not responding to the set up, let's go ahead and perform a reset.

"Reset HomePod or HomePod mini

  1. Unplug HomePod or unplug the power adapter for HomePod mini. Wait 10 seconds, then plug HomePod back in.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, then touch your finger to the top of HomePod and hold it there.
  3. The white spinning light will turn red. Keep your finger down.
  4. Siri will say that your HomePod is about to reset. When you hear three beeps, you can lift your finger.

This is not just a matter of "resetting one's HomePod mini." The issue of HomePods (and minis) being stuck in "configuring mode" has been driving users crazy for a while now. It's all over various forums. Apple has yet to officially acknowledge this strange (I think we can call it a) bug. It's about time they do and fix it.

I have been having the same issue with my HomePod Minis. Yesterday one stopped playing sound, even though both showed up correctly as a stereo pair. So I did a complete reset of both (as described above), combined them as a stereo pair, and they have been stuck "configuring" ever since. I can't use them at this point. Resetting them again also doesn't solve this issue (I had done that multiple times before). All I can do now is wait and pray for a miracle. Last time they stopped "configuring" after a few hours. Let's see how long it'll take this time.

Extremely user-unfriendly and frustrating. This is so not what Apple is about.
