What exactly does the "turn display off on power adapter when inactive" option mean?

I just got a 2023 macbook pro. It has an option to turn display off on power adapter when inactive. What exactly does this mean? A power adapter doesn't have a display so I'm confused. I tried searching for an answer online but couldn't find anything. Any help? Thank you.
