In every app (TextEdit, Firefox, Preview, Word), Speech just stops, over and over. It won't start at the cursor and read to the end. It won't read the entire selection, no matter how small or large the selection is. This is a giant pain in the butt, as I need to hear most things spoken aloud instead of sitting at the computer to read. Is this happening to others?

I am having the same problem. It just arrived after my latest macOS update. I tried changing the speed of voice, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. It's very frustrating. Text to speech worked flawlessly in the previous version. It's a new bug.
I thought it might be the kind of thing they quietly modified or changed the controls to. Changing machines is so painful...
If your brand new Mac is faulting, take it back to Apple for warranty repairs. If it's still within it's "free" return period you can get an entirely new one.
Apple might replace it anyway. They just did that on my wife's 6 month old iPad. But, she has AppleCare+ too.
