Keep map display on apple watch awake while navigating

Until recently when using maps, the directions used to stay awake on my Apple Watch so with a quick glance I could always tell when is coming up next. But now, they only appear when a turn comes up. How can I keep maps always awake on the watch face when navigating?

Try iPhone, Watch app, My Watch tab, General, Return to clock. Scroll down and tap on Maps and in "WHEN IN SESSION" section turn on "Return to App".

Unless you have "always on" the screen will always go black when turning wrist down

Try this. I did everything that was suggested above but added one last thing when it didn’t work.

Go to General - Return to clock. Click on the arrow to the right. Scroll down to Apps and click on Maps. Choose “Return to Clock” - Custom. Scroll down to “When in Session” and turn on “Return to App”.

I also ended up selecting “After 1 hour” just above the When in Session section. Maps now seem to be staying visible on my watch now when I’m navigating. This extra step seemed to make a difference but not clear to me why.
